Basque PEN

Basque PEN, together with Garabide Elkartea, Erroa Argitaletxea and the Maya Kakchiqel University of Guatemala, is involved in a very special project related to the International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019. We are preparing a poem book that will show the literary treasure of the indigenous languages of the world.

 

Therefore, we need that the poets writing in indigenous languages send one of their poems. You can find all the details for this book project in the below texts.

CRITERIA FOR PUBLICATION IN THE BOOK Jendeak eta eleak

​

The book, that we expect to publish in late 2019, will consist of about 60 to 100 poetic texts (depending on the number of submissions), one for each language or linguistic commuity. The aim is to collect all these samples of minorized languages and to show to the world this cultural richness and diversity - thus creating networks of collaboration around language revitalization processes.

This will be a way to commemmorate the International Year of Indigenous Languages for the organizations working in this project: Erroa Publishing House, Basque PEN, Garabide and the  Universidad Kaqchikel.

The criteria for the texts to be published are as follow:

• The main topic in the book will be the language itself: the values, meanings and the future of our language, always from the creative freedom of the author.

• Notwithstanding any reivindication or denounce, the aim of the book is to transmit a view of strength of our culture, a positive and motivating message of the use of our languages.

• The poem should not be longer than 50 lines and it should be presented both in the original indigenous language and the translated version (preferably in English, otherwise in Spanish or French)

• Together with the poetic text, the author should send a short presentation (10-15 lines, preferably in English, otherwise in Spanish or French) about himself/herself and his/her community: geographic location, number of speakers, sociolinguistic situation and any other relevant fact. This must be accompanied by a signed declaration accepting the translation and publication of the book.

• The deadline for the collection of the texts is May 15th (however, the earlier we receive them, the better, so that we can start the translation and edition process).

• Ideally every linguistic community should decide which poem they publish in the collection. Should more than one poem be received, organizers will decide which one suits better for the publication (after consulting experts of the linguistic community, as long as possible).

CRITÈRES POUR LA PUBLICATION AU LIVRE Jendeak eta eleak

 

L’ouvrage, qui devrait être publié à la fin de 2019, comprendra entre 60 et 100 ouvrages poétiques (selon la réponse aux demandes), un par langue ou communauté linguistique. L’objectif est de rassembler autant d’échantillons littéraires dans des langues minoritaires et de montrer au monde la richesse et la diversité culturelle, ainsi que la possibilité de créer des réseaux collaboratifs autour des processus de revitalisation linguistique.

Ce sera une façon de célébrer l’Année Internationale des Langues Autochtones pour les organisations partenaires dans le cadre de ce projet : la Maison d’Édition Erroa, Euskal Pen, Garabide et L’Université Kaqchikel.

Les critères applicables aux textes à publier sont les suivants :

• Le thème du livre sera la langue elle-même : les valeurs, les significations et le devenir de notre langue, toujours à partir de la liberté créative et poétique de l’auteur.

• Sans préjudice de toute revendication ou dénonciation, l’objectif de la publication sera de transmettre une image de force de nos cultures, un message motivant et positif de l’utilisation de nos langues.

• Le poème ne peut dépasser 50 lignes et doit être présenté tant dans sa propre langue que dans sa version traduite (en anglais de préférence, en espagnol ou en français).

• Avec le texte poétique, l’auteur devra présenter une brève présentation (10-15 lignes, en anglais de préférence, et sinon en espagnol ou en français) sur lui-même et sa communauté : situation géographique, nombre approximatif de locuteurs, situation sociolinguistique de la langue et autres données pertinentes. Vous devrez joindre une déclaration acceptant la traduction et la publication du poème dans le livre.

• La date limite de livraison des textes est fixée au 5 mars et s’achève le 15 mai (dès qu’ils seront reçus, mieux ce sera, pour commencer tout le processus de traduction et d’édition).

• L’idéal serait que chaque communauté linguistique décide quel poème est publié dans la collection. S’ils reçoivent plus d’un poème, les organisateurs choisissent le poème qu’ils jugent le plus approprié (en coordination avec des experts de la communauté linguistique, dans la mesure du possible).

CRITERIOS PARA LA PUBLICACIÓN EN EL LIBRO Jendeak eta eleak

 

El libro, que se espera publicar para finales del 2019, constará de entre 60 y 100 textos poéticos (dependiendo de la respuesta a las solicitudes), uno por cada idioma o comunidad lingüística. El objetivo es reunir dicha cantidad de muestras literarias en lenguas minorizadas y mostrar al mundo la riqueza y diversidad cultural y también, en cierta medida, la posibilidad de crear redes colaborativas en torno a los procesos de revitalización lingüística.

Este será un modo de conmemorar el Año Internacional de la Lenguas Indígenas para las organizaciones colaboradoras en este proyecto: Editorial Erroa, Euskal Pen, Garabide y Universidad Kaqchikel.

Los criterios que se aplicarán a los textos a publicar son los siguientes:

• El tema del libro será la propia lengua: los valores, significados y devenir de nuestra lengua, siempre desde la libertad creativa y poética del autor o autora.

• Sin perjuicio de ninguna reivindicación ni denuncia, el objetivo de la publicación será transmitir una imagen de fortaleza de nuestras culturas, un mensaje motivador y positivo del uso de nuestras lenguas.

• El poema no podrá superar las 50 líneas y se habrá de presentar tanto en la lengua propia como en su versión traducida (al inglés preferentemente, y si no al español o francés)

• Junto con el texto poético, el autor deberá presentar una breve presentación (10-15 líneas, en inglés preferentemente, y si no en castellano o francés) sobre sí mismo y su comunidad: ubicación geográfica, número aproximado de hablantes, situación sociolingüística de la lengua y algún otro dato relevante que proceda. Deberá acompañar una declaración aceptando la traducción y publicación del poema en el libro.

• El plazo de entrega de los textos se abre el 5 de marzo y finaliza el 15 de mayo (cuanto antes se reciban, mejor, para poder comenzar todo el proceso de traducción y edición).

• Lo ideal sería que cada comunidad lingüística decida qué poema se publica en la colección. En el caso de recibir más de un poema, los organizadores elegirán el poema que consideren más oportuno (en coordinación con expertos de la comunidad lingüística, en la medida de lo posible).
